NSPanel Pro Roadmap and Co-Created Future

Screen timeout while running Home Assistant:

Actually the feature that could meet your requirements is called System-level screensaver which is also included in v4.2.0.

Proximity sensor behavior:

It seems NSPanel Pro has Proximity Sensor, but in fact it does NOT. NSPanel Pro has a Light Sensor. We can use the detected big changes in light as a trigger to turn on NSPanel Pro’ screen. This is why a hand-waving gesture needs to be made in front of the screen. It also works when you get close to NSPanel Pro and you accidentally block the light.

When using apps like Home Assistant, I can’t access the NSPanel’s dropdown menu without exiting the app. Is there a gesture or shortcut that allows opening the menu from within other apps?

We haven’t considered it yet. We thought an App Switcher is enough in this case. opening the drop-down menu from within other apps is a rather infrequent operation, isn’t it?

I’m also very interested in the VUI Entry feature. Is there already a timeline for its release? I’m actually considering buying the HA Voice PE for voice control.

We don’t have a timeline for VUI Entry right now. There are too many features on our list, and we are working like a hell.

I’m certain that NSPanel Pro could work as a VUI Entry, but I must admit that the microphone and speaker of NSPanel Pro are not as superior as they are of Home Assistant Voice PE.

That’s for beta versions, what about the official one?

That’s for official beta versions :joy:. You mean the stable version? That is v3.12.0.

Ok thanks, my question was about when is planned the 4.1.0 stable version release.

Anyway, in case I enroll beta version program, can I skip versions waiting for the stable one and, more important, roll back to the latest stable?

What are the plans for Matter Hub in Nspanel Pro?

Will Nspanel Pro support new types of Matter devices?

For example, Matter smoke detectors or light intensity sensors.

We are steadily improving the Matter Hub feature. For example, we have upgraded the built-in Matter SDK to v1.4. But we couldn’t formulate a detailed plan, because:

  1. Not many Matter devices have been added to eWeLink platform.
  2. The Matter Hub feature is encountering stability issues caused by incompatible Matter devices. Yeah, this is weired, because Matter devices are supposed to be compatible with each other.

Currently, Ihost Matter Bridge cannot be added to the nspanel pro matter hub.

Errors occur, the ewelink app keeps crashing, and nspanel pro keeps restarting

I’ll check it. This should not happen.

I can send logs if needed.

In my understanding and based on what the dev team has stated and what common sense suggests - the 4.1.0 stable release isn’t actually planned to exist. Everything seems to be progressing according to roadmap (the one named " The Roadmap: Recent 4 versions that we are going to develop"), just not toward a version labeled “stable.” The process is unfolding, and one day it may conclude… but probably not with a 4.1.0 badge.

If you enroll in the beta program, you can usually skip versions while waiting for a stable release, but keep in mind that rollback isn’t possible, so once you’re in, you’re committed to the ride.

If you do not take my word for it, go ahead and ask Staff of eWeLink

Got it, allow me last questions, you said last stable is 3.0.12, current beta is, 4.1.0 and 4.0.12, the one recently installed on my nspanel is what?

How can i recognize a stable versione against a beta one once enrolled in the beta program?

Thanks

This is great, thank you! But does that mean theSystem-level screensaver could simply turn off the display and not show anything?

This is soooo strange.. I could bet my life that I remember seeing this advertised, but I cannot find anything now, so I guess I was wrong, sorry. Hopefully, you’ll find the best way to utilize the light sensor then, thank you! Just standing in front of the panel would be ideal, not having to wave..

Well, it really depends on your approach I guess. I frequently access Alarms, Settings, and F-droid from the dropdown menu - even more frequently now when constantly updating, restarting, and testing. I personally would prefer having access to this menu and even having App Switcher and other/future features listed there, instead of this semi-transparent bubble I have to constantly move and click to go back. It is also a much more natural and intuitive experience, similar to what we have on our phones.

UPDATE: Having said that, may be an option to schedule automatic restarts is also a very good idea.

Noted, thank you. It still would be a great option for a small and quiet room I guess.

1.wake on wave

2.Full customization of the home screen(the classic theme, now there are 3 buttons that are mostly useless that can’t be changed, and it can show only one temp/humidity zone, i myself have an outdoor temperature sensor and now have to choose do i want to look at its readings or the one from the indoor sensor)

3, A way to make a voice call to another device with ewlink app(android, ios)

4.Same behavior for the screen when an app is chosen for default start app(now when in home assistant the screen is aways on)

5.If it’s technically possible a way to add a running app as a screen(i guess it will be a heavier load on the hardware, so it might be unreliable)

Somehow the device still updated without user input, can’t explain as it was the old version in the morning and in the afternoonit displayed notification “NSPanel Pro has stopped” with only user selectable button being “Open app again”. After that I noticed it had updated.

I tested the app you suggested and mostly it works very much like the Webpages, but it can be set to true fullscreen without the down-arrows. Thank you for the suggestion!

Your considerationn of users’ wishes is admirable.

I’m interested in this point too: I’ve been talking about system screensaver lately, but it’s actually this feature I was searching for: turning the screen off after xxx seconds.

Maybe they’re 2-in-1, with a “off” screensaver option?

I mean a screen where you can configure one, or two, maybe three of four icons, when you tap on an icon you change the state of a variable, which can be used inside automations, just like any hardware wall switch does, for example a short tap open the door, a long tap close the door, double tap locks the door.

Got it. I fully agree it would be useful to export a soft switch to Home Assistant or 3rd-party Matter ecosystem, and use the soft switch as a trigger.

By the way, you can create a manual scene (Tap to perform) in eWeLink App, and then add the scene to NSPanel Pro screen. It works like the soft switch function you just described.

But does that mean theSystem-level screensaver could simply turn off the display and not show anything?

We think theSystem-level screensaver should display anything that could be configured.

I personally would prefer having access to this menu and even having App Switcher and other/future features listed there, instead of this semi-transparent bubble I have to constantly move and click to go back. It is also a much more natural and intuitive experience, similar to what we have on our phones.

I understand. The feature you described is called Full-screen gestures which is only available from Android 9. Unfortunately NSPanel Pro is running on Android 8.1, and we haven’t figured out how to backport Full-screen gestures feature to Android 8.1.

Currently, our approach is to update Android 8.1 to Android 10 or Android 12, which would provide us many new Android built-in features automatically. We have one software engineer working on this, and I hope we could complete it within 3 months.

PS: we are new to build Android Operating System and related kernel drivers of NSPanel Pro’s peripherials. So it will take us some time. We will also open source it when we get it done.

may be an option to schedule automatic restarts is also a very good idea.

Yes, I like it too.

We will release v4.1.1 bugfix version before Wednesday, which has following features and bug fixes:

  1. Bring back several Open API endpoints which can solve the issues in your usage scenario.
  2. Reset the Auto-Lock timer when you invoke the /open-api/v1/rest/screen/display/wake-up so you know exactly when the screen will turn off (Settings -> Display -> Auto-Lock).
  3. An option to completely disable OTA on NSPanel Pro. No automatic download, can’t manual update.
  4. Access to Android’s built-in Settings App. This offers a wide range of configuration options, but could also break the system if it is messed up.

It will be difficult or may not work at all, but using Open Gesture or LMT Launcher (Pie Controls) is possible for a close approximation, and both are available for F‑Droid. However, third‑party gesture apps may conflict with certain apps or cause lag. There are landscape mode issues, because some gesture systems don’t work well in horizontal orientation.
Let me throw a few pebbles into this garden. In my view, bolting this onto the NSPanel Pro is like attaching a harvester to a scythe. Allowing F‑Droid support has sparked some rather fantastic expectations, yet this device was never meant for that. Even if you stick a peacock feather into it, it will still remain a control panel, not a full‑blooded tablet for your wall or desk. I believe pushing in this direction risks losing sight of the truly useful features. Following that logic, why not add Alexa support? After all, there’s a microphone and a speaker. But really—what for?

Hi everyone, we have just released v4.1.1 bugfix version.

Unfortunately we don’t have enough time to implement Feature 3. This feature will be introduced in v4.1.2.

  1. An option to completely disable OTA on NSPanel Pro. No automatic download, can’t manual update.

This is great news, thank you!

@MichaelLearnsToCode @JoJo and everyone else involed - I’m genuinely impressed by your team’s approach and the amount of time and effort you invest in listening, explaining, supporting, and bringing the ideas of this amazing community to life. Thank you for that - it truly feels like a co-created future! The NSPanel Pro was already a solid device at launch, but if you continue with this approach, I truly believe it (and any future hardware revisions) has the potential to become something even greater.

Just installed it without any issues. I was pleasantly surprised by the new changelog screen. Just for your information, it was displaying an older version..

Yes, I hurriedly posted the availability of v4.1.1 without waiting for my colleague to update the release notes

In my opinion, you should consider a larger panel, at least 7-8 inches. The current panel, although constantly being developed, is unfortunately too small.
