Sonoff Mini R4 with a remote switch

I have a couple of mini R4 and would like to use them alongside a physical switch.

However, because of the wiring in the house and the size of the wall box, I can not use the R4 in the same wall box as the switch.

However, it is easy to wire the R4 next to the light I wish to control, but that is about 20 feet away from the wall box where the switch is.

Therefore, I am wondering what sort of wire to use between the two.

The obvious and easy answer is to use normal electrical cable, but that seems a little clumsy and ott. I have also read that it can be subject to em triggering.

Therefore, I am wondering if I could use something much smaller, say standard cat5stp cable, which would be immune to interference.

According to Sonoff, S2 is high, and when connected to S1, it is dragged low, and the switch detects this change, triggering the light on/off.

Now I also know that S2 is at mains voltage, but it seems the trigger will not require much current, so is it safe to use something like cat5 stp as the trigger wire?

Hi, the wall box can be replaced and its depth can be extended. Then it is possible to use smate2 and control the minir4 remotely. I assume that another problem is the absence of a neutral wire at the switch.

I would not recommend using UTP for 230V transmission. The cable is intended for communication and low voltage, it does not have the necessary cross-section and its mechanical properties are not suitable for use in classic terminals.

The neutral wire at the switch is not the issue.

And as we all know it’s the current that determines the cross section of a wire, not the voltage. Hence the question. That said I recognise I am pushing the limits here and I am also not saying I will do it (I am just exploring possibilities), I just can’t see why not because Sonoff’s own presentation says the switch detects the rise and the fall of the voltage (edge switching) therefore I would expect to be carrying milliamps.

Technically it can be used but as I said it is not intended for this use its cross section is small and the insulation for mains voltage is also not planned the wires can easily break.chapu is cheap but price is not everything. what to try in combination with r5
