A question about eWeLink and matter over thread?

Hi all

Im wondering if I’ve missed somewhere any discussion or direction statements over the time re eWeLink policies and thoughts about matter over thread as a direction. Does anyone want to chime in with information or thoughts on eWeLink moving towards products incorporating this rather than fully in with zigbee and wifi?

Cheers

Michael

This is actually a perfectly reasonable question — but it’s built on a pretty shaky assumption. eWeLink hasn’t published any clear strategy around Matter‑over‑Thread, and everything they’ve done so far suggests a very cautious, almost tip‑toe approach to Matter in general. Definitely nothing that looks like “we’re moving from Zigbee to Thread now, everyone follow us.”

In practice, the situation is much simpler (and a bit funny): eWeLink/Sonoff currently has zero Thread devices. Not “few”. Zero. All their Matter products are Matter over Wi‑Fi, which is basically the easiest, least revolutionary way to say We support Matter.

Their entire battery‑powered lineup still runs on Zigbee 3.0, and Zigbee remains their main ecosystem. Their own local protocol, eWeLink Remote, was quietly abandoned, and—plot twist—nothing replaced it. Certainly not Thread. There’s no Thread Border Router, no Thread sensors, no Thread switches, no Thread roadmap. Not even a rumor.

At the moment, their direction looks more like:

  • Zigbee stays king
  • Matter over Wi‑Fi for marketing
  • Thread politely ignored in the corner.

If they ever decide to embrace Thread, they’ll need new hardware, new firmware, new certifications, and—frankly—a new strategy. And nothing they’ve done so far hints that this is happening anytime soon.
